Epiphany Eve in Orthodoxy: traditions and customs

Epiphany Eve is always celebrated on the same day - January 18th. This is the eve of the feast of the Epiphany, which falls on the 19th of January. Water January 18 and 19 is considered to be Epiphany and heals many diseases. Many Orthodox Christians are thrice dipped into an ice-hole three times, washing away the sins that have accumulated during the year.

And my Epiphany Eve is associated with the miracle of healing my mother's sister from the effects of a stroke, after which she could not speak or move. And at our neighbors the child spoke after sprinkling and a few sips of baptismal water. There are many miracles on the feast of the Epiphany, you just need to see them. Today I want to tell you about the baptismal traditions, as our ancestors noted on Christmas Eve.

Church holiday traditions

The Eve of Epiphany (Epiphany Eve) is celebrated in memory of how Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River. Therefore, the hole in baptism and called Jordan. In the church on the 18th, the Great Consecration of water is held, which is repeated on the 19th. In Greek, consecrated Epiphany water is called Agiasma.

Great consecration of water is carried out after the liturgy. Water consecration is called great in commemoration of a great event that happened 2,000 years ago, when the prophet John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ in Jordan. At that moment, the Holy Spirit descended on the Lord in the form of a dove, and the voice of heaven sounded: "This is my beloved Son, in whom is my favor."

Through the immersion of God in the flesh, the very nature of water was sanctified; therefore, it is considered sanctified these days. Orthodox Christians sprinkle their dwelling and outbuildings on the Epiphany with water, at this time they sing the troparians of the Epiphany. They brewed cattle with baptismal water and sprinkled hives: people believed that it also sanctified animals.

They drink Epiphany water on an empty stomach throughout the year, so that there is good health, and the body is cleansed of sins. This ceremony is performed with the reading of prayers and gratitude to Christ for salvation:

Holy water has an amazing feature to transfer its properties to ordinary water. Therefore, when Baptismal Voditsa ends, you can add it little by little into ordinary water: all the water becomes completely consecrated. Even a few drops of holy water can sanctify ordinary water.

Where is the holy water stored? Store water in bottles near the iconostasis. You can store Epiphany water in the closet with food.

On a note! On the Epiphany Eve, the Christmas eve ends, the beginning of which falls on the Christmas Eve.

The name of the Christmas Eve is not accidental: on this day, at a meal, it was eaten spicy, cooked from cereals with honey. With a boil and cooked on Christmas Eve.

On Epiphany Christmas Eve, Orthodox Christians keep a strict fast; you can only eat food (sochivo) after the rise of the first evening star. At first it was necessary to drink the consecrated water, and then start the meal. On the feast of Epiphany on January 19, the fast is not held.

Folk traditions

In Russia, every great holiday was celebrated with special solemnity, and special traditions and rituals were born among the people. So, on the Epiphany Eve, it was customary to collect snow from the stacks: the women bleached linen cloth for them, and the girls washed for beauty. Also, the Epiphany snow was thrown into the wells, so that the water in them would never dry out. They washed themselves in the bath with melted snow so that their health was strong and the beauty did not leave the face.

In addition, a special healing power was attributed to the Epiphany snow. Therefore, it was collected and for the healing of various ailments. This tradition has been preserved to this day, but instead of snow they use an ordinary shower.

And for the fulfillment of desires, they gathered the Baptist voditsa into a bowl and looked to see if it would stir up at night. If you noticed the movement of water in a bowl, fled into the yard and looked at the sky. It was believed that the wish made after that was sure to come true.

Note! It is believed among the people that on the night of January 18-19, the heavens open, and any made-up desire comes true.

On Epiphany Eve, a thorough cleaning of the house was carried out, paying particular attention to corners and secluded places. It was believed that there is hiding evil forces, which must be driven out of the house by sprinkling holy water with prayers.

After the rising of the evening star, they sat down at the table, which consisted of an odd number of lenten dishes. The hostesses put various dishes on the table: kutya (sochyo), uzvar, pancakes, pies. The fasting table didn’t do without porridges with vegetable salads.

Note! Kutya on the Epiphany Eve was prepared without adding butter and cottage cheese, therefore it was called “hungry” or “mother-in-law”.

On this night, the Christmas time came to an end, so the girls used the last chance of Christmas divination to the betrothed and other questions of interest to everyone. The church disapproves of such activities, but the people believed that evil in these holy days could not harm.

For the expulsion of evil spirits chalked crosses - on doors, shutters and other places. It was believed that evil spirits will not appear in the house until the next Christmas time.

Snowfall, blizzard or snow drifting on Epiphany Eve promised a rich harvest. If there was little snow, then the year promised to be poor for berries and mushrooms.

Bans on Christmas Eve:

  • laundry;
  • swear words and showdowns;
  • take out or give away something from home;
  • lend money;
  • drink alcohol and overeat.

Dreams on Epiphany night are considered prophetic, therefore, upon awakening, you should try to remember what you see. So that the dream will not be forgotten after waking up, you cannot wrap your head around with your hands.

The rite of fulfillment of desire in the Epiphany Eve 2020

Before going to bed, pray to the Lord, read the prayers for a dream to come. Then write your cherished wishes on a piece of paper, one wish on each piece of paper. Roll the leaves into a tube and place it under the pillow.

In the morning on waking, remove one of the leaves from under the pillow. What desire was recorded there will be fulfilled within a year. However, one cannot make deliberately unfulfilled desires; one can receive punishment from above for them.

When your wish is fulfilled, do not forget to thank God for your mercy. Go to church, put candles to your favorite icons and order a prayer of thanksgiving.
